Real played yesterday, becks scored a goal in the 13th min of play, but alas real lost 2-1. they maintain 3rd place in the La Liga. BUT YAYAYAYYAYA FOR BECKS, it was an awesome freekick!! BENDING it in from 35 m top right corner the goalie had no chance!!

MADRID, Spain (Ticker) -- Real Madrid is reportedly prepared to sell former England captain David Beckham in January's transfer window.

The 31-year-old midfielder has been unable to earn a starting job for the Galacticos under new coach Fabio Capello.

And with Beckham refusing to sign a new contract at the Bernabeu until he is guaranteed a starting spot, the Spanish giants may offload him in January to stop him leaving for nothing next summer.

Real bought Beckham from Manchester United in 2003 and signed him to a four-year, $41 million contract, but it seems certain he has no future under Capello.

Beckham has started just four games under the new regime and played only 13 minutes of Sunday's victory over Barcelona.

He has previously stated he is not interested in a return to England, but Newcastle boss Glenn Roeder admits he would be at the front of a bevy of clubs who would welcome him with open arms.

"I think a lot of clubs in the Premiership would like to have David Beckham," Roeder said. "I think if he came back, bearing in mind he said he will never play in the Premiership again, any team lucky enough to secure his services -- their supporters will enjoy watching him play."

Beckham has been strongly linked with a move to America's Major League Soccer. But a return to England's top tier would arguably give his chances of a return to the national fold under Steve McClaren a shot in the arm.

David and Victoria Beckham said today they could not comment on speculation the footballer is to receive a knighthood.

According to reports, the footballer is line for the award in the 2007 New Years Honours list.

It has been suggested in Whitehall that Beckham, who received an OBE in 2003, be recommended for the knighthood in recognition of his sporting achievements and his contribution to the successful London Olympic bid, the Daily Express reported.

The former England football captain was a major figure in London’s Olympic bid last year, travelling to Singapore at the time of the decision.

A move to make the star “Sir David” would also allow wife Victoria to use the title Lady Beckham.

A knighthood would add Beckham’s name to a long list of footballing greats who have received the gong, including Sir Geoff Hurst and Sir Bobby Charlton.

A spokesman for the couple today said: “We have no comment on this speculation.”

David Beckham joined the preparation stage at the same time as the Brazilian quartet. The Englishman suffered an Achilles tendon injury on his left knee during the quarter-finals against Portugal and he has not fully recovered, although with the help of the physios and remaining medical staff, he hopes to be fit in no time to join the rest of the squad normally.
Wearing a band under his injured knee, the Real Madrid number “23” began the first jog of the day. The doctors had adviced him to begin running and to stop as soon as he felt any pain. Which is precisely what happended shortly after. Becks quit just before finishing the second of the two light jogs scheduled for this evening session as he felt a sharp and sudden pain coming on. He was escorted out of the pitch and into the dressing rooms by Dr. Hernández. Throughout the night, the medical services of the Club will diagnose the scope and seriousness of the injury, letting him know what recovery period they have in mind.

Newcastle 'move in for Beckham' as Owen faces year out

Newcastle United were last night linked with a summer move for David Beckham, after it emerged that Magpies chairman Freddy Shepherd met the former England captain at a London hotel yesterday.

Beckham held talks with Shepherd on the day Newcastle learned they will be without striker Michael Owen for up to 12 months a shattering blow for Steve McClaren, whose new England regime officially begins on 1 August.

The return of former Manchester United midfielder Beckham to English football would represent a major coup for Newcastle, who want him to wear the No7 jersey made famous at St James' Park by the likes of Kevin Keegan.

Newcastle are said to be willing to put together a £120,000-a-week package to bring him back from Spain. New Madrid coach Fabio Capello wants Beckham to stay but Newcastle are desperate to sign a high-profile player, especially after more bad news about Owen yesterday.

McClaren's problems are already mounting up. The announcement on Wayne Rooney's international ban was delayed yesterday but it was the developments around Owen that proved more serious, with fears he may be out for up to a year.
The 26-year-old has been to see the Colorado specialist Dr Richard Steadman, who helped to rebuild the career of Alan Shearer after he suffered cruciate ligament damage.

However, Owen's first examination identified other complications. The examination revealed lateral cartilage damage which had to be repaired before the player's ruptured anterior cruciate ligament and Owen will now have to return to America after a further eight weeks for a second operation. Owen may not now have his cruciate ligament operated on until the end of next month, meaning he could be out well into 2007.

McClaren's England play four of their Euro 2008 qualifiers between 2 September and 11 October and there are three more matches in the second half of the season. With the possibility of a five-match ban hanging over Rooney, the new manager's striking options could be severely limited. It means if the 16 August friendly goes ahead, against Greece or an alternative side, McClaren is likely to recall Jermain Defoe.

David Beckham has announced he is standing down as captain of England at an emotional press conference in Germany.

The Real Madrid midfielder read out a statement to confirm he wants to hand over the armband after almost six years in the role.

But he stressed he is determined to remain an England player and is not retiring from international football.

It was a tough decision to make and Beckham clearly struggled to hold back tears as he spoke to journalists at England's World Cup training camp.

He said: "On 15 November 2000, Peter Taylor gave me the greatest honour of my career in making me captain of England and fulfilling my childhood dream.

"Now nearly six years later, having been captain for 58 of my 94 caps, I feel the time is right to pass on the armband as we enter a new era under Steve McClaren.

"It has been an honour and a privilege to captain our country and I want to stress that I wish to continue to play for England and look forward to helping both the new captain and Steve McClaren in any way I can.

"I came to this decision some time ago but I hoped to announce it on the back of a successful World Cup, but sadly that wasn't to be.

"This decision has been the most difficult of my career to date. But after discussing it with my family and those closest to me, I feel the time is right.

"Our performance during this World Cup has not been enough to progress and myself and all the players regret that and are hurt by that more than people realise.

"I wish to thank all the players for their support during my time as captain as well as Peter Taylor, Sven and all the coaches.

"I would also like to thank the press and of course the England supporters who have been great to me and to my teammates. I want them to know that for me it's been an absolute honour.

"Finally, I have lived the dream. I am extremely proud to have worn the armband and been captain of England and for that I will always be grateful."
